1. Ask the Client to Log in to SSA.gov
If your client has an account on the Social Security Administration’s website (SSA.gov), they can access their MBI easily:
- Have the client log in and navigate to “Get a Benefit Verification Letter.”
- Under the Medicare information section, they’ll see their MBI.
2. Call 1-800-MEDICARE with the Client
Calling 1-800-MEDICARE is another reliable way to retrieve an MBI, especially if you’re in the same location as the client:
- Use speakerphone with the client present, or set up a three-way call if you’re remote.
- A Medicare representative will confirm your identities and provide the MBI.
- If the first representative can’t locate the MBI, request to speak with a “level two” rep, who may be able to assist.
3. Check with the Insurance Carrier
Some carriers offer support in retrieving MBIs for agents and clients. If you’re unsure, reach out to the carrier by phone or email to see if they can assist. However, since carriers usually operate within set office hours, it’s best to try SSA.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE first for faster access.
4. Ask the Client to Log in to Medicare.gov
If your client has an account on Medicare.gov, they can log in to access their MBI and even order a replacement Medicare card if needed.
Note: New Medicare enrollees will need their MBI to create a Medicare.gov account, so this method won’t work if they haven’t yet received or registered their card.
