Did You Know? TriCare for Life Works with Medicare—Not Instead of It

If you’re a retired service member or part of a military family, you may have access to TriCare for Life (TFL)—and it pairs beautifully with Medicare.

But how exactly do these two programs work together? And what should you know before enrolling in Medicare Advantage or Part D? Here’s a quick, practical breakdown.

What Is TriCare for Life?

TriCare for Life is health coverage provided by the U.S. Department of Defense. It’s available to eligible military retirees and their dependents and acts as secondary coverage to Medicare—which means it can cover what Medicare doesn’t.

How TFL Works with Original Medicare

If you have both Medicare Part A and B:

✅ Medicare pays first.
✅ TriCare for Life pays second, covering your out-of-pocket costs for TFL-approved services.
✅ You don’t have to file claims—everything is coordinated between Medicare and TFL automatically in most cases.

This setup provides strong coverage with minimal hassle, which is why many retirees choose to stick with Original Medicare + TFL.

What If You Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan?

If you decide to enroll in a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan:

⚠️ You’ll have to pay copayments at the time of service.
📝 Then, you must submit paper claims to TriCare for Life to get reimbursed for those copays—but only for TFL-covered services.

Important Warning About Drug Coverage

Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D drug coverage by default.

👉 But if you enroll in a separate drug plan (including one bundled with MA), you’ll lose access to TriCare’s pharmacy home delivery through Express Scripts.
👉 You’ll also need to manually file claims for prescription reimbursement through TFL.

Pro Tip: If you’re happy with TriCare’s pharmacy benefits, don’t enroll in another Part D plan.

Finding a Provider with TriCare & Medicare

You have options—but choose carefully:

  • ✅ Medicare Participating Providers – Covered and coordinated smoothly.
  • ✅ Non-Participating Providers – Still covered but may charge more.
  • ⚠️ Opt-Out Providers or VA Facilities (non-service-related care) – May result in significant out-of-pocket costs.
  • ✅ If TFL is your primary coverage, you must use TriCare-authorized providers.

In Short…

TriCare for Life + Original Medicare = Seamless, powerful coverage
TriCare for Life + Medicare Advantage = More paperwork and limitations

Always double-check before changing plans, and speak with a licensed advisor if you’re unsure how it will affect your TriCare benefits.
